A Secluded Make Over on the Fox River
These owners were thrilled to find a gem of a piece of property at the end of a quiet dead end street and at the no-wake zone by the locks on the Fox River… a double WIN!
This home was built in the 1950s and the current owners knew the whole house would need to be remodeled. The rooms were small and the home did not take advantage of the beautiful view of the river. The new plans started with plenty of glass and open concept main living areas which included a dining area with built-in cabinets, living room area with a fireplace and a kitchen area with a large island. All the walls facing the river are glass so that no matter what room you are in you can to enjoy the view. There are three bedrooms, two of which face the river with large windows and a glass door allowing the owners to step out onto a future patio to enjoy the stars and the river while cozying up under the existing overhang. The house has a guest bathroom and a master bath that are connected with a large walk in closet and a laundry room making it functional for both the owners and their guest.
A different contractor started this project and had given the client a preliminary price. They completed the demolition of the interior of the structure before the plans were finished. The final quote turned out to be more than the owners were willing to pay. Scholl Construction was called in to give them a second quote. We were able to work with the architect to meet the requirements of the client while staying within budget. This included maintaining the width of the old window frames but making the windows taller for a better view and a more modern look, using a standard glass door instead of a slider in the bedrooms to save money and bring in light, and raising the ceiling a high as possible, creating the look and feel of cathedral ceilings without having to remove and reconstruct the roof. Older homes typically have thinner walls so we suggested using Closed Cell Spray Foam for a higher insulation factor while keeping it green.
