Accessible Design
The concept of Universal Design in home building is to create spaces accessible to the whole family no matter what age or level of abilities. In the case of this project, the goal of the universal design was to ensure the family’s special needs son could be comfortable in his own home, while his parents are able to age in place.
Two of the three levels in this home incorporate universal design construction features to make the spaces completely accessible. An electric lift system with ceiling tracks enables easy transfer from bed to the specially designed tub to toilet to desk. Hallways are built to be wide enough to accommodate an electric wheelchair. Electronically assisted doors and remote-control window shades add ease, comfort and accessibility throughout the home.
With an eye to the future, the lower walkout level features separate living quarters with a complete kitchen, generously sized bedroom, accessible bathroom with zero-depth shower access and an elevator to the first floor and garage. Outside, unobtrusive ramps provide wheelchair access to the front door, garage and around to the lower level patio and backyard pond. Interior Design by White Oak Interiors.
Scholl Construction — You know it’s one thing to entrust what is likely the largest most important purchase of a lifetime with someone you don’t know,,, It’s yet another to see into the future and be sure you make the right decision. Five Years ago, Scholl Construction built our home. This home came with a lot of special features to adapt for our special needs son and in every single instance our expectations were met or exceeded. From start to finish every component of the project and timeline was explained and adhered to. Here’s the best part… After 5 Years, we have had zero issues with the home!!! I’ve now seen the future and it’s important to take this time to again say, “Thank you Peter!!!” Our home is a spectacular dream come true – you and your team made it all possible!
This testimonial was written 2 years after the one above…
In case you were wondering… We still love this freaking house you built!!!!! Every second, every hour, every day!
