Throughout the remodel, the owners focused on incorporating authentic Victorian-era details. They added panel molding to the walls and imported plaster medallions and cornices to capture the home’s historic character. The plaster medallions and cornices, sourced from England, were installed by the only historic plaster installer in the Chicago area. Modern doors in rooms and closets were replaced with antique doors that would have been original to the home in 1902. A faux fireplace was added to the sitting room just off the entrance adding a comfy ambience to the room.

The kitchen underwent a significant remodel, with existing cabinets painted white and extended to the ceiling. Glass-front cabinets, new granite countertops, and a farmhouse-style sink contribute to the kitchen’s updated yet classic aesthetic. Cabinet panels were added to the refrigerator and freezer to camouflage the doors.

To improve energy efficiency, the owners replaced windows and doors, added insulation, and installed modern lighting fixtures, including can lights throughout. All the bathrooms were remodeled with new flooring, plumbing, tile, and fixtures, including a claw-foot soaking tub in the master suite.

By thoughtfully blending historic preservation and modern upgrades, the owners of this Victorian home have created a living space that honors the past while providing the comforts of the present. This remodel showcases the ability to maintain the character and charm of a historic home while ensuring it functions as a modern, efficient residence.
