Transformation of a Historic Farmstead in Bull Valley, IL
This historic farmstead in Bull Valley, IL, offers a unique opportunity to transform a charming property into a truly exceptional living space. The original plans called for converting the barn into an entertainment space, utilizing the corn crib as a garage, and adding a luxurious master suite as part of an addition to the original farmhouse that was built in 1902.
Challenges were discovered upon closer examination of the barn and corn crib’s conditions. Both structures had sustained significant insect damage to the wood over more than a century. The decision was made to demolish the barn and corn crib salvaging the foundation and as much good wood as possible to be repurposed for the new construction. The field stone foundation, while sound, required the addition of a level surface to build on and support the weight of a modern addition.
Where the corn crib once stood, a 4 car garage was built. This spacious garage provides ample storage and parking space. The design blends functionality and style with the farmhouse charm.
The new entertainment barn was built on the bones of the original foundation adding a wall of windows to enjoy the view of the countryside. 400 square feet of recycled barn wood was used to panel this wall.
The new 1144 square foot addition to the farmhouse included a laundry room, an upscale closet, a master bathroom and bedroom. Beams from the old barn were utilized in the bedroom’s vaulted ceiling as well a beam that was repurposed for the mantel on the fireplace.
