United Protestant Church
The United Protestant Church in Grayslake, Illinois, was built in the 1950s. Not much had been done to it since it was built. The architects approached us with a detailed plan to update the worship areas. The building was sound structurally but almost everything else had fallen into disrepair.
Scholl Construction rebuilt the altar platform, rebuilt the choir balcony, refaced the fireplace, tuck-pointed the masonry, remodeled the parlor area and built custom cabinets.
We also upgraded all the lighting and heating to new efficient standards. After we removed the carpeting in the main level asbestos tiles were found and construction was halted. We hired a special asbestos removal company to safely take up the tiles and certify the building safe to continue the remodel.
Another challenge was redoing the ceilings and beams 64 feet up from the church floor. We were always tied off, but working from a 60 foot scaffold was scary at times. Scaffolding sways at that height and feels less stable than it is. The congregation, architects and Scholl Construction were extremely proud of the end result. The new church will provide many more years of service to its members.
