How long will it take to build my house taking into account current supply chain issues?

Building the house, from the time I get started, which may mean digging the hole, to the time I finish, is about seven months. And that’s about how long it’s taken since I started my career over 30 years ago. Since the pandemic, the supply chain has gotten completely different. I used to be able to order windows and have them in three weeks, siding three weeks, cabinets, pretty much anything you wanted was three, at the most five weeks out. Since the start of the pandemic, lead times have increased dramatically. The factories are taking longer to get things out. It’s not unheard of to have windows take six months, cabinets take 18 weeks, siding take six weeks, rail systems, eight to nine weeks.

Are there delays with garage doors and appliances?

There are garage doors that are readily available in standard sizes. Most of the homes and renovations I’m doing are custom projects. So those garage doors are at least 20 weeks out. You’re looking at six months to get a set of garage doors custom made for your house.

There’s a lot of problems with appliances right now. Most of my customers are mixing and matching appliances or they’re picking brands or lines that they can get in a reasonable time frame. But it’s not unheard of to wait two years or more for appliances now.
